Alex Neil praised stand-in goalkeeper Liam Roberts’ “sensational” performance during Millwall’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Leeds today.
Femi Azeez made headlines with a match-winning brace, but Roberts, who was chosen ahead of Lukas Jensen for the fourth round trip to Elland Road, impressed between the posts.
The highlight of his performance was undoubtedly a brilliant penalty stop against Pascal Struijk around the hour mark, as Leeds looked for a way back into the game following Millwall’s second goal.
But Neil told Millwall TV that he was impressed by Roberts’ overall performance, which came just weeks after he kept another league clean sheet against Portsmouth.
Neil said of the custodian: “He was brilliant throughout the game. He performed quite well in his most recent game, away at Portsmouth. You can see what that implies for him. He’s a really passionate individual who wears his heart on his sleeve. He adores it, and he enthrals the audience. He was excellent, so fair play.”
Wes Harding made only his second appearance of the season at right-back, replacing the cup-tied Tristan Crama, and was praised for his role in keeping Leeds out.
Neil added: “What’s great about the team is that they genuinely care about each other and want to see each other succeed. It makes me really happy to watch it.
“Wes was one that we gave a special mention to at the end of the game because he’s had a rough time here and hasn’t been engaged much.
“Fair play to him, because he came in and put a great performance in.”
