Yankees Bolster Pitching Rotation with Veteran Starter on Minor League Deal

The New York Yankees’ rotation appears to be set for the 2025 season, but they have signed a prospective player who could aid at some time this year.
The organisation has signed veteran Carlos Carrasco to a minor league contract. According to Jack Curry, Carlos Carrasco has signed a minor league deal with the Yankees. He was 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA in 103 2/3 innings for Cleveland last season. “Carlasco turns 38 in March,” Curry wrote on X.

Carrasco isn’t exactly young, and he’s clearly past his prime. As Curry noted out, the right-hander struggled last season, posting a 5.64 ERA and 3-10 record in 21 starts for the Guardians. Carrasco was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in May 2019, yet he missed only three months.

However, since the diagnosis, he has not been as effective on the mound, with a 5.02 ERA and a 27-35 record. It makes sense that the Yankees signed him to a minor league contract since there just isn’t room for him in the rotation right now. However, I’m confident the Venezuelan will get some action in major league spring training.

This winter, New York signed Max Fried to a record-breaking contract, joining Gerrit Cole at the top of the rotation. They also have Carlos Rodon, Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt. Marcus Stroman is still around, although the team is looking to move him following a poor second half in 2024. Stroman did not pitch in the Bronx Bombers’ run to the World Series.

If Stroman is transferred, Carrasco’s chances of playing MLB innings for the Yankees will increase. There’s also the possibility that NY will try to employ Carrasco outside of the bullpen. While he has never worked as a reliever in his career, it may be a more direct road to pitching for the American League champions in ’25.
