Gillingham are interested in signing Ayr United defender, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke on X.
Gillingham are connected with a late January transfer window move for the centre-back. They have till Monday’s deadline to complete an agreement.
Stanger, 24, sees his contract with Ayr United expire at the conclusion of the season, and he is expected to become available in the summer. He has made 30 appearances in all competitions this season under former Fleetwood Town manager Scott Brown, 22 of which have been in the Scottish Championship, and he has scored once.
Gillingham eye George Stanger
Stanger might help Gillingham’s defence.
If Ayr United do not sell him this month, they risk losing him for nothing.
He signed a two-year contract with Somerset Park in 2023 and has since established himself as a crucial player. Brown’s side is currently second in the division, trailing Falkirk, and are aiming for promotion to the Scottish Premiership.
After joining The Honest Men, he told the Ayr Advertiser: “I would characterise myself as, first and foremost, and I hope so, a good defender.
“I believe I’m swift, athletic, and good in the air. But I also enjoy getting the ball down and playing.
“As a modern centre back, if you want to reach the highest level you need to be good on the ball.”
Stanger is a New Zealand youth international who has most recently competed at the Under-23 level.
He started at Stirling Albion before being signed by Hamilton Academical as a youth.
The Melrose native was loaned out to East Kilbride and Forfar Athletic to gain experience before moving on to the University of Stirling, Dumbarton, and Alloa Athletic, where he currently plays.
What now for Gillingham target George Stanger?
Time will tell whether Gillingham can persuade Stanger to cross the border to England in the coming days.
He’s played a lot of football in Scotland’s lower leagues, and losing him would be a setback to Ayr United.
