Dundee United are trying to strengthen their team during the January transfer window.
Jim Goodwin’s side is third in the Premiership after an excellent return to the top flight, and they are favourites to maintain that position given Aberdeen and Motherwell’s recent struggles.
Hearts are simply too far behind currently to pose a threat, while Hibs have reinvigorated themselves but sit seven points behind the Terrors in sixth place.
Goodwin is targeting Europe for Dundee United next season and has been strengthening his squad this month to give them the best chance of success.
Ruari Paton and Lewis Fiorini joined on loan from Port Vale and Stockport County for the remainder of the season, respectively, while striker Sam Dalby was confirmed not to be recalled by Wrexham.
United are thought to be closing in on their third January signing, and it’s a known figure in Scottish football.
Dundee United want Luton Town’s Allan Campbell
According to the Courier, Dundee United are ‘pursuing’ a loan deal for Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell.
Campbell, a former Motherwell player, is now on loan at Charlton Athletic, although the Addicks are said to be willing to cancel the loan agreement.
The 26-year-old has struggled for playing time at Charlton and is thought to be considering a return to Scotland, maybe with Dundee United.
Advanced discussions between Luton, Charlton, and Dundee United are expected to take place on Thursday, as the clock ticks down to Monday’s deadline.
Earlier in the window, Aberdeen and Hearts shown interest in Campbell. Not The Old Firm understands that both clubs were at least looking.
But it looks United are in prime position to get Campbell, who has 86 appearances for Luton and 160 for Motherwell.
Campbell was compared to N’Golo Kante
Luton Town signed Campbell from Motherwell in June 2021, shortly before his contract at Fir Park expired.
He went on to play a key role in the club’s historic promotion to the Premier League the following year, earning the nickname ‘Lanarkshire Kante’.
Campbell revealed in a 2022 interview with Football Scotland that the tag was given to him by former Motherwell CEO Alan Burrows.
N’Golo Kante was a standout for Leicester City, who stunned the world by winning the Premier League in 2015/16.
He later went on to flourish for Chelsea, winning the Champions League with the Stamford Bridge club in 2021.
Campbell said of the nickname: “He (Burrows) mentioned it on Twitter, and it caught on. Being termed anything like that is classy. “Isn’t he one of the world’s best midfielders?”
