Crystal Palace loan winger scooped up the man-of-the-match award on his debut for Gillingham against Doncaster Rovers at Priestfield.
Asher Agbinone, a newly recruited Gillingham winger, believes the club can still contend for the play-offs this season.
The Gills have gone four games without scoring, but Agbinone was a bright spark in attack on Saturday, albeit he couldn’t find the net in a 1-0 loss to Doncaster Rovers.
Gillingham travel to Tranmere this weekend, closer to the relegation zone than the top seven, but Agbinone remains optimistic about his chances of success this season while on loan.
He stated, “I simply want to help the squad as much as I can, push for the playoffs and reach as high as possible, win games, go on a winning streak, and help the team.
“We have a strong bunch with a lot of quality in the locker room.
“It showed in the game (on Saturday), especially in the first half.
“We have enough quality to beat higher-ranked clubs. Never claim something is impossible.
“We didn’t take our chances (against Doncaster) but we’re working on that in training and we’ve definitely got the quality to score a lot of goals, it’ll happen in due time.”
Agbinone is on loan from Crystal Palace and made his debut right away, starting the game.
He stated, “The gaffer has been terrific since the first day I met with him in training, and he has told me the kind of play he wants to play, which he has obviously executed in training, having us working hard and playing the proper manner.
“All we have to do is trust it and stick with it; it will happen.
“All we have to do is trust it and stick with it; it will happen.
“I believe we were the better team in the first half, prior to the goal. We dug in and worked extremely hard.
“They couldn’t move out of their own half for the first 20-30 minutes. We had them on the ropes. We only needed to take a chance, and it will arrive.
“A little more conviction, you know, could change the game.”
“We’ll go back into training and work on that stuff and make sure that we make it right for the next game against Tranmere.”
Agbinone had made two Premier League substitute appearances this season, against Nottingham Forest and Fulham at Selhurst Park.
Now that he’s made his Football League debut, he expects to score soon.
He stated, “I just like to excite fans, get them out of their seats, create chances, and obviously try to get goals and assists for the team.”
“Although it didn’t happen (on Saturday), I’ll absolutely do it the following game.
“I simply need to keep working and plugging away; it will happen.
“I loved it. The crowd were great. Stick with us; we will make it happen. We are going through a difficult phase right now, but we will absolutely come out on top.”
Jonny Williams, an experienced midfielder who Agbinone remembers well from his time at Palace, has helped him settle in at Gillingham.
“He’s a top player and an even better person,” the 19-year-old added.
“He’s helped me settle in nicely. He has been there for me both on and off the pitch. I can actually learn a lot from him.
“He basically informed me from the start that he’s here to support and aid me, and it made me feel more at ease. I appreciate his doing it.”
Agbinone recalls Williams’ speech to the young Palace aspirants when he was younger.
He stated, “He gave a speech to my age group when I was with the under-13s, and then when I played against him in the Trophy (for Palace against the Gills earlier this season), I went up to him and told him about it, but I don’t think he remembered!”
“He said (at the time) to keep working hard, stay focused, never think you’ve made it, no matter how well you’ve done or whatever, and just keep going, it’s a long journey.”
