The Atlanta Falcons have already decided on Kyle Pitts’ future, having picked up his option last offseason. Kyle Pitts will return for the 2025 season, along with blocking tight end Charlie Woerner, who is under contract for the next two seasons. A reliable starting tandem, the Falcons are unlikely to split them unless they decide it is time to offer Pitts a fresh start somewhere. Given the GM’s end-of-season words, that is hardly surprising.
Looking at free agency and potential fits that the Falcons may pursue if necessary, one name stands out. Austin Hooper will enter free agency this offseason after finishing the season with 476 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Given the challenges he encountered in New England, Hooper had a fantastic season. If the Falcons have a vacancy at the position, the reunion would be definitely worth exploring.
Austin Hooper could be a great veteran security blanket for young quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
Hooper is not an excellent pass catcher and does not have the upside of Kyle Pitts, but he provides stability that Pitts does not. The veteran’s effort and pass-catching abilities are consistent, making him an ideal match for a youthful Atlanta Falcons offence.
Austin Hooper began his career with the Atlanta Falcons, playing for them from 2016 to 2019. Since then, the veteran has played for the Browns, Titans, Raiders, and Patriots. The Falcons last made the playoffs during Hooper’s second season in the league. This demonstrates how long this franchise has been struggling, unable to fully rebuild or advance back into contention.
Given the Falcons’ future direction, allowing Hooper to leave was the proper decision. Losing the veteran harmed Matt Ryan’s performance, but Atlanta lacked the necessary cap room to keep Hooper and address the rest of the team’s issues. It would be a terrific story and a perfect match to have Hooper return to Atlanta to assist the team get back into postseason contention.
Pitts and Woerner are both under contract for next season, making this an unlikely move. However, it would undoubtedly improve the Falcons and provide a consistent veteran target for their rookie quarterback. It is worth thinking as Atlanta prepares for the offseason.
