St Mirren boss says he wants to add two new players to his team before the end of January, with a winger “looking very close” to signing.
Paisley have already signed two players since the transfer market opened, with goalkeeper Zach Hemming returning on loan and forward Owen Oseni coming from Gateshead.
Robinson is eager to conduct additional business, as signing targets frees up certain players to join other clubs.
“I would like to add two more,” he remarked. “In the offensive areas, we are extremely close to signing a wide player.
“Hopefully, we can get one more in as well. It would enhance the team, which I would then balance with boys moving out.
“We are clearly at the mercy of other teams as well. We will look to shift some players, as we are likely to be top heavy in the forward areas.
“We’ve brought Owen in, and I believe he’s a project comparable to Toyosi Olusanya, and we’ve all seen how Toyosi developed. We believe Owen will be the same.
“Zach, I am quite confident in. I had to throw him in at the deep end because Brentford had called Ellery Balcombe back, and he hadn’t played in a long time.
“We’re very confident in that signing and we know exactly what we’re getting.”
Robinson denied a link between Rotherham United and Saints attacker Mikael Mandron, but did indicate in general that certain players may be permitted to leave this month.
“We’ve had some enquiries about individuals and if it suits us and we can place them then it’s up to me to refresh the squad, especially in the forward area where we want freshness and some new bright ideas for everybody,” said the director of rugby.
“If we can do that, we will, and if we can help lads along the way, even if they don’t play football here, I believe it is vital to treat people well.
“If they’re not going to play or be in the way of some of the younger boys coming through then we’ll be fair to them and let them go and play football if it suits us and it’s the right deal for the club.”
When asked if the club would consider bids for Olusanya and Richard Taylor, both of whom are nearing the end of their contracts, he emphasised that the club did not need to sell anyone.
“I’ve got a very good relationship with Jim Gillespie, who does all the transfer dealings with myself and Martin Foyle,” Robinson told reporters. “We communicate every day about stuff, and I’m not under any obligation to sell somebody.
“Both lads are tremendously committed to the football club, even if they will not commit to staying beyond the summer.
“But you earn a lot of prize money for each place, so you have to evaluate the financial gain against the loss of players departing, which influences where you finish in the league.
“The board understands it and knows that we will be in charge of it. We don’t let athletes or agents dictate when they leave.”
