New Hull FC recruit opens up on his decision to join, team goals, and the intense rivalry with Hull KR

The player was one of the Black and Whites’ 10 new players, although recent sources say that one of them, Jordan Abdull, has already departed the team.

It is still a season of wholesale upheaval at the MKM Stadium, and for Asiata, it means replacing a club that has made the playoffs in consecutive years with one that has only three wins in 2024.

The former Leigh captain spoke to BBC Radio Humberside on why he joined Hull FC, adding that it was an opportunity to’make a difference’.

He talked about it: “The first thing was the opportunity of a new journey for myself and the second one was seeing the young players that were coming through and being able to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Asiata outlines Hull FC squad expectations

Hull FC were obliged to give debuts to a slew of inexperienced players in 2024 as their squad changed frequently; yet, the influx of youthful talent proved to be a crucial motivation in Asiata’s decision.

He explained: “I’ve been there as a junior, and I’ve been fortunate to be connected with some great players like Jonathan Thurston, who have helped me with my game and taught me along the road.

“For me, I would like to give back and there are a lot of youngsters here who are very very talented and I’m hoping that I can play a role in taking their careers to the next step.”

Asiata had previously highlighted three such young players that he has been highly impressed with while detailing his leadership role, which has since been confirmed as vice-captain behind Aidan Sezer.

The vice-captain was also asked about the Hull KR rivalry, but it appears he is equally excited about the club’s own progress in 2025, insisting that the emphasis is on effort-based areas and developing that identity.

“I’m very excited,” he replied when asked about the cross-city rivalry.

“I understand how important the game is for both teams. It’s one of the games I’ve looked into to see when we’ll be playing because I’d like to participate.

“I’m excited to see how we do. I would not say we are under pressure. The only thing we need to focus on is ourselves; obviously, there are a lot of changes and new players in the squad, so it’s all about developing relationships at this point.

“The more games we play together, the stronger our bonds and connections become. All we want to do as a group is make our supporters proud by how we show up and how we play; effort-based areas are key to what we want to be recognised for.
