Wigan Athletic have made an offer for Fleetwood Town captain, according to writer Pete O’Rourke.
Wigan Athletic will be looking for a better second half of the season after failing to build on last season’s impressive performance.
The Latics recovered from a points deduction under Shaun Maloney in 2023/24 and were expected to carry on from there this time around. However, they are presently 17th in the League One table, with 27 points from 23 games, seven points ahead of the drop and 14 points behind the top six.
Winter business will be critical to their effort to move up the third-tier table, and word of a new bid has arisen.
Reporter Pete O’Rourke of X reports that Wigan Athletic has made an offer for defender Brendan Wiredu. It is unclear how much has been tabled at this point, or how Fleetwood Town has responded.

Wiredu signed a new deal in January of last year and had previously been linked with a move away from the League Two club. He is currently under contract until the summer of 2026 and is a significant role at Highbury Stadium.
More on Brendan Wiredu
Wiredu, a former Charlton Athletic youth prospect, has been at Fleetwood Town since 2022, joining the club after impressing at Colchester United.
The Wigan Athletic target has been permanently assigned to a defensive role in recent seasons, but he has also found success in midfield. His physical profile makes him a genuine asset, but he also provides vital leadership, and his time in midfield gives him a solid presence on the ball.
Wiredu has primarily played in League One, but he also has experience in the third tier. He has appeared 73 times in the division, which should assuage any doubts about his ability to make the jump.
Wigan Athletic’s defensive options
Maloney could use some defensive reinforcements at Wigan Athletic this month, which is why he’s looking for League Two captain Wiredu.
They presently have Jason Kerr and Will Aimson as possibilities in the middle. James Carragher is the main cover, while Toby Sibbick, who plays right back, can also play centrally.
Luke Chambers is still on the books, although he is sidelined. The addition of Wired would be quite nice, but time will tell if the bid becomes more serious.
