Chesterfield have turned down a proposal from Blackpool for their winger, we understand.
The Tangerines have been tracking the 24-year-old winger and have made an offer to the Spireites, but it has been turned down. However, our sources in the North West say the League One team is interested in him and is preparing a second proposal, so this is unlikely to be the end of the matter.
James Berry helped Town win the National League title last season after joining from Macclesfield for a fee. He is the Blues’ joint highest scorer this season, with 10 goals across all competitions, including some fantastic strikes.
The wideman is from Wigan, so a move closer to home could be appealing, as could the potential of playing in a higher division under an experienced manager like Steve Bruce. Blackpool are 15th in League One, 11 points from the play-offs and 10 points above relegation.
If Chesterfield choose to sell, they still have until February 3 to replace him, when the transfer window closes, which is preferable to losing him towards the end of the deadline.
Berry started in the Liverpool academy before going to Hull City. After a brief hiatus from football, he joined Altrincham but never appeared before joining for Macclesfield, where his goals and assists earned him individual honours and helped the Silkmen climb the divisions.
In other transfer news, Luton Town have recalled striker Aribim Pepple, 22, from his loan term at Southend United, while his move to the Spireites progresses. A deal for former Ipswich Town defender Janoi Donacien, 31, is also thought to be close.
Chesterfield do not have a game this weekend, but they will play Rotherham United at home on Tuesday night in the EFL Trophy round of 16.
