Watford are interested in Sevilla forward, who is expected to return to England soon, according to Spanish news station ABC (via Sport Witness).
Watford will attempt to build on a strong first half of the season in 2025.
Despite some harsh losses recently, the campaign has gone far better than many at Vicarage Road imagined. After 24 games, the Hornets are eighth in the Championship table, two points behind the play-offs.
Winter recruitment might mean the difference between fading away and continuing to push for the play-offs.
According to Spanish rumours, Watford has a new target. According to Seville-based publication ABC, the Championship side is interested in Sevilla forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who might be on the move again this winter just a few months after joining in July.
Tom Cleverley’s team is thought to have made a six-month loan offer, although other clubs have also expressed interest, and there is competition in the Championship.
It comes as Iheanacho has yet to score in nine La Liga games, despite scoring three goals in two Copa del Rey games against lower-league opponents.
English pedigree
Iheanacho may not have played his greatest football in recent years, but he’s a striker who is highly regarded for his prior Premier League success, so Watford would be pulling off a decent coup by signing him.
The 28-year-old originally rose to prominence at Manchester City, where he scored 21 goals and assisted seven times in 64 games before joining Leicester City. Iheanacho made 232 appearances for the Foxes, scoring 61 goals and providing 34 assists.
The Nigerian has played in Europe, making nearly 200 Premier League outings and earning 55 international caps.
Iheanacho has much high-level experience on these shores, and if he can regain his form, he may be a valuable asset in the championship.
Watford’s current strikers
Many believe Watford may benefit from adding another striker to their ranks this month. Vakoun Bayo has handled the majority of the goalscoring burden, however Edo Kayembe has contributed from midfield and Kwadwo Baah’s performance has grown.
In terms of strikers, Cleverley requires more goals.
Daniel Jebbison has struggled to impress on loan from Bournemouth, while Mamadou Doumbia is a bright young player who still needs to grow.
Signing someone with a proven goal scoring record and extensive experience, such as Iheanacho, could be a wise decision, but only time will tell if the rumours are true.
