Record Transfers, Striker Struggles: Is This the Key to Wrexham’s Promotion Hopes?

The Welsh club had a very busy summer transfer window, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds supporting them significantly.
Wrexham spent £500,000 on Ollie Rathbone in August, breaking their record for the first time that month.

After Rathbone, the team was looking for a new centre-forward as deadline day approached.

Will Lankshear was connected earlier this summer, while Bailey Cadamarteri signed for League One rivals Lincoln City.

Wrexham eventually secured Modou Faal on deadline day for a new club record cost of £590,000 from West Bromwich Albion.

Prior to the signing of Faal, the McElhenney and Reynolds-backed club was looking for another centre-forward.

Will Keane has floundered since Wrexham interest

Wrexham made a proposal for Will Keane, but Preston North End rejected it on August 28th.
Keane, the brother of Everton defender Michael Keane, began his career at Manchester United before joining Preston from Wigan Athletic in 2023.

During his debut season at Deepdale, the striker scored 13 goals and provided three assists in 38 games.

As a result, it appeared like Wrexham’s failure to sign him during the summer was a significant missed chance.

However, his form in 2024/25 has gone off a cliff, with Keane scoring just one goal in 11 league appearances this season.

Even a struggling Paul Mullin has scored more than the 31-year-old this season, and it is unlikely that Wrexham will resume their transfer interest in January.

Wrexham want to sign a striker

Despite spending a record fee for Faal, Wrexham hope to sign a striker during the forthcoming winter transfer window.

Patrick Bamford has been linked, but his salary and probable transfer fee may make him difficult to sign for a League One club.

Wrexham want to sign Ethan Wheatley from Manchester United as well, but it would be a loan rather than a permanent deal.

For the time being, the club will have to make due with their current options for the game against Barnsley on January 1st.

Steven Fletcher is unlikely to start, but his recent form on the bench should alleviate Wrexham’s centre-forward difficulties until a new signing is completed.
