The rigorous Championship schedule resumes on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, with another full slate of fixtures. Millwall, who have a new manager, face Oxford United in one of the early games, while QPR host Watford a half hour earlier.
Both teams drew their previous meeting, and a win here would be appropriate for the holiday season, given that they both lost on Boxing Day. Here we round up all the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding the Championship clubs.
Cleverley blasts Watford
Tom Cleverley has criticised his Watford side ahead of their match against QPR, after being disappointed with their performance against struggling Cardiff City on Sunday, which resulted in a home loss. He said, according to the Observer, “Look at how we restarted the game. One thing you don’t want to do against a squad battling for their lives is give them hope and allow them to disrupt the game.
“Along with that, we committed far too many unforced errors, something we did not do against Portsmouth. It meant we couldn’t build enough pressure, and we let them off the hook too many times through sloppiness and lack of attention. We had to accept defeat and recognise that, to a man, we were not good enough.”
Millwall manager David Livermore did not have any inside information on Alex Neil’s appointment, saying on Sunday that he was still unaware of the situation despite being on the incoming manager’s coaching staff.
“I’m probably as aware as you guys are,” Livermore remarked on Sunday. “I don’t think it’s a secret, does it? However, as I have stated, this is all taking place behind the scenes. It’s really out of my control. It wasn’t on my mind today since I was focused on the game, and as I mentioned, there will be an announcement tomorrow.”
Wooh links
Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Rennes star Christopher Wooh. According to Jeunes Footeux, the Whites have filed an inquiry, amid speculation that Rennes may offload Wooh in January.
The 23-year-old defender has 43 league games for Rennes and is a 13-time Cameroon international. It is unknown whether Wooh will be a starter at Elland Road, but he would surely offer competition at the centre-back berth, bringing top-flight experience with him.
