Gillingham’s “Horrible Mentality” Exposed as Captain Demands Redemption Against AFC Wimbledon

Gillingham captain  admitted that the team’s performance against Colchester on Boxing Day was inadequate, and he believes they must improve against AFC Wimbledon on Monday.

The Gills were defeated 2-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium, their first loss in four games.

Max Ehmer provided an immediate match reaction while also looking ahead to the remainder of the schedule throughout the New Year time.

Match Reaction…

It was not good enough. We lacked control of the game. We didn’t win enough second and first balls. Overall, it was a bad day. We need to learn it rapidly because we seem to be inconsistent in doing it.

We lacked control and quality at times, and we had the opportunity to get back into it but did not. We did not make it count. It affects everyone.

It was a series of blunders leading up to the goal, but one of the things we take pride in is being quick starts, and we haven’t started quickly. They took the lead within the first six or seven minutes. We were unable to get out of our half. We will dissect that in the coming days.

Needing to improve…

We’re almost blessed to have another game coming up, but you can only get away with it for so long before the season finishes and you’re trapped in 14th place. That’s not what everyone in that dressing room wants. We’ll go through this game today. We can’t just set things aside. You must eventually accept responsibility for your actions.

Looking ahead to AFC Wimbledon and the games in the New Year…

Our away support numbers were fantastic on Boxing Day. We haven’t given them what they deserve, therefore it’s up to us to make things right against AFC Wimbledon.

This league’s games are all tough. For whatever reason, we do better against better teams, but this is something we must overcome. That is a horrible mentality to have. You should approach every game as if it were a cup final.
