Norwich City Faces 2025 Exodus: Which Players Could Be Headed for the Exit?

Norwich City has 11 players that could leave for free in June 2025 if contract extensions are not granted to those whose deals expire.

The Canaries have struggled for consistency this season, and recent dismal defeats against Queen’s Park Rangers, Portsmouth, and Burnley have hampered their play-off campaign.

Johannes Hoff Thorup will be cautious about who he extends contracts to, as the former Premier League club has failed to satisfy expectations. With room in the squad to recruit reinforcements, a few players may be shown the door at Carrow Road when their contracts expire.

According to Transfermarkt, these are the 11 Norwich players who will leave the club in the summer if no new contract is agreed upon.

Angus Gunn

Scotland international Angus Gunn has experienced his fair share of ups and downs in Norfolk. The former Southampton custodian has proven to be a reliable shot-stopper, but he is also somewhat inconsistent.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer and could look for a new challenge somewhere after being at Carrow Road since 2021.

Christian Fassnach

Christian Fassnacht’s playing time has been reduced this season owing to injury. He appeared to be a big coup for Norwich when he joined from BSC Young Boys last summer, but he has struggled to reproduce the form he demonstrated in Switzerland.

However, the 31-year-old’s current contract includes an option for an additional year.

Emiliano Marcondes

Former Brentford player Emiliano Marcondes joined the Canaries in the summer after being released by AFC Bournemouth.

The Dane has played in the bulk of City’s games thus far, and he has the option to stay for another year.

Jacob Sorensen

Jacob Sorensen, a Championship winner for the Canaries, has been with the East Anglian club since 2020.

Sorensen, at 26, finds himself as a rotation option in Thorup’s midfield. However, he has the same clause in his contract as Fassnacht and Marcondes, which allows him to extend for an additional year.

Grant Hanley

Grant Hanley has won the Championship trophy three times in his career, demonstrating his experience as a consistent champion at this level.

The Scottish defender is nearing the end of his career and has played sparingly for the Yellows this season. With no option to extend, Hanley might be released if no new deal is reached.

Onel Hernandez

Since 2017, Onel Hernandez has been a fixture at Carrow Road. Unfortunately, he had a hamstring injury, which has kept him inactive for some time.

The Cuban winger, like Sorensen, is a rotation player for Thorup, thus he will not be given priority for a new contract. However, the option for an extra year suggests that he may stay put.

Ashley Barnes

Ashley Barnes is out of the picture for Thorup’s side, having made only a few outings.

The 35-year-old’s future, however, is under the club’s discretion, as he has a one-year extension that Norwich can activate. Given his performance this season, that is unlikely to be utilised.

Tony Springett

Tony Springett, 22, will be seeking for the next step in his career to secure consistent playing time.

Unfortunately, his playing time at Carrow Road has been restricted, and he may be tempted to leave in the summer.

Jonathan Tomkinson

Jonathan Tomkinson is in a similar situation to Springett in terms of match minutes. This season, the American defender has struggled to get enough playing time.

However, unlike the previous man on the list, the 22-year-old is eligible for a further year.

Jaden Warner

Jaden Warner completes a hat trick of 22-year-olds struggling for playing time. The defender had a successful loan spell at Notts County last year, but is yet to make an impact at Carrow Road.

With no option to extend his contract, Warner may hunt for work elsewhere.

Archie Mair

Finally, young custodian Archie Mair is the last player out of contract this summer.

The 23-year-old has yet to appear for Norwich, but he has had some successful loan periods elsewhere. City also has the option to keep Mair with the club after 2025.
