Is Wrexham’s Promotion Push at Risk? The Key Statistic Phil Parkinson Must Address in 2025

Wrexham were held to another uninspiring draw at Bristol Rovers in League One.

With Rovers managerless going into the game, many expected the Red Dragons to easily beat the 19th-placed team; however, that was not the case.
Elliot Lee put his side ahead due to a fantastic assist from Matty James, but Wrexham were pulled back by Promise Omochere’s late equaliser.

Mark Griffiths, who controlled for the entirety of the game, highlighted Wrexham’s inability to finish the game, a habit that is coming back to haunt Phil Parkinson’s team.

Wrexham’s worrying trend of conceding late goals

Bristol Rovers’ 86th-minute equaliser is the latest in a long run of late goals allowed by Wrexham.

For example, on four of the last six occasions that the Red Dragons dropped points, they conceded a goal after 80 minutes.
Back-to-back draws against bottom-half teams would hurt Ryan Reynolds’ promotion aspirations, especially because Huddersfield and Stockport have won convincingly.

Wrexham are now third in League One, but their awful tendency of conceding late is costing them important points, which could affect them come May.

Phil Parkinson urges Wrexham to be more ‘clinical’

With the Christmas season in full force and games coming thick and fast, Wrexham manager Parkinson will hope this pattern disappears shortly.

Parkinson, speaking to the Wrexham YouTube channel following the Rovers draw, focused on his team’s recent failure to close out games.

“It’s terribly unfortunate that we didn’t get all three points today. To be honest, the game should have been over by now; we played so well in the first half and scored a fantastic goal.

“Then we had further possibilities to expand the lead, but we did not take them. In the second half, we had more opportunities to win the game. However, if those opportunities are missed, we are still exposed to a costly moment. We were hardly threatened during the game, with the exception of a few set plays, which I thought we handled admirably. Of course, it hurts to concede so late in the game, especially given the players’ effort, physicality, and performance were excellent, but we needed to be more clinical when the comments came in and put the game to bed. We should be talking about a 2-0 or 3-0 victory.
