Foster’s Final Act: How Wrexham’s Promotion Hopes Took Shape with His Guidance

Ben Foster rejoined Wrexham during the conclusion of 2022/23, coming out of retirement to support his former club.
The Red Dragons were vying for automatic promotion from the National League after 15 seasons.

Foster proved to be an excellent short-term signing, becoming their number one custodian for the remaining few months of the season.

He made some great saves and won several games for the club, including a crucial match against Notts County that contributed to their promotion.

While working at the Racecourse Ground, he tried to aid Wrexham with recruitment, persuading one megastar to relocate to Wales.

Player Ben Foster wanted at Wrexham confirms retirement

Since their Hollywood owners took over, Wrexham has been accustomed to signing big names, including Foster.

Paul Mullin’s arrival was significant at the time, as he had previously dominated League One.
The arrival of James McClean, who brings a wealth of Premier League experience, was also significant.

However, Foster wanted Wrexham to sign Nani last year because he was without a club at the time, which would have been great.

He said, “Nani doesn’t have a club, everybody. I believe he should come to Wrexham…Would you like to come to Wrexham?

The former Manchester United player, who was with the custodian at the moment, responded, “You never know.”

The 38-year-old, of course, did not transfer to Wrexham and, according to BBC Sport, announced his retirement from football this week after scoring 128 goals in 616 appearances for the club.

Ben Foster League One promotion prediction

Despite leaving early in 2023/24 following a tough start to the season, the custodian has maintained contact with the club and is definitely a fan.

Foster predicted Wrexham’s promotion in May, and he now looks like a genius.

At the time, he stated: “I believe they will invest in another four or five, possibly half a dozen players.

“Good players, solid individuals, and solid professionals who will raise the bar just a little higher.

“But I believe that what they have in that team is League One level. If you can add a little more quality and experience, I believe they will be there or thereabouts next season.

“And to go back-to-back-to-back, I don’t know if it’s been done before, but it’d be phenomenal.”

Following their Saturday victory over Burton Albion, Wrexham are currently joint-top of League One, trailing just their opponents on goal difference.
