According to Graeme Bailey’s report on TBR Football, West Ham United is interested in Michael Carrick. Sporting director Mark Noble is spearheading the East London club’s pursuit of the Manchester United legend, as Julen Lopetegui’s long-term future remains uncertain. However, David Sullivan has ruled out a deal for Middlesbrough’s 43-year-old manager.
Michael Carrick and his journey so far
Michael Carrick’s stock has risen dramatically since entering the managerial ranks a few years ago. The Englishman, a native of Wallsend, graduated from West Ham United’s development level and has played for several Premier League clubs throughout his career, including a legendary time with Manchester United from 2006 to 2018.
Carrick made his management debut in 2021, taking over as interim manager of Manchester United after the club parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer midway through the 2021/22 season. The 43-year-old has been on Manchester United’s coaching staff for numerous years, refining his talents under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer.
However, Carrick’s first permanent position came with Middlesbrough, who hired him midway through the 2022/23 season. Since then, the English tactician’s stock has soared, with Boro showing potential under his tutelage with a victory rate of more than 50%. Carrick’s development has tipped off West Ham United.
West Ham return on the horizon?
West Ham United’s interest in Michael Carrick is understandable. The Hammers are looking for a manager as Julen Lopetegui’s long-term future remains questionable. The heat is rising on the Spanish manager, who has struggled to push West Ham to the next level since taking over from David Moyes.
If Lopetegui fails to turn around his team’s fortunes, they may face relegation. Several contenders, including Graham Potter, are on West Ham United’s radar, with Carrick being a possible target. However, a deal for the 43-year-old Englishman is unlikely to materialise.
While sporting director Mark Noble admires Carrick’s flair, David Sullivan has ruled out signing the Manchester United star. So, West Ham will look elsewhere, with the English tactician not arriving at the London Stadium next year.
