Tom Cairney saved a point for Fulham against Tottenham before getting sent out for a horrendous tackle on Dejan Kulusevski.
The Cottagers captain had an exciting 20-minute appearance off the bench as Marco Silva’s side escaped with a 1-1 draw in north London.
Cairney was brought on from the bench in the 62nd minute, with Fulham trailing after Brennan Johnson’s opening.
Just five minutes later, he drew the visitors level with a stunning curling strike into the bottom right corner.
It was his first goal away from home since March 2010 when at Hull.
However, he quickly went from hero to zero after being given his marching orders in the 82nd minute.
Referee Darren Bond first gave the 33-year-old a yellow card for a challenge on Kulusevski.
However, VAR told him to go to the pitchside monitor, where replays revealed Cairney’s studs-up lunge into the back of the Swedish international’s calf.
Bond had no choice but to enhance his initial booking to a straight red for significant foul play.
Sam Ellard, commenting on the tackle on talkSPORT, simply stated, “That could have broken his leg.”
Meanwhile, the Premier League Match Centre’s X account posted: “The referee’s yellow card call for Cairney’s challenge on Kulusevski is being reviewed by VAR, who has recommended an on-field review for serious foul play.”
“The referee then issued a red card to Cairney.”
Cairney will miss Fulham’s next three games.
He will now be absent for Thursday’s game against Brighton at Craven Cottage.
He will then be unavailable for next Sunday’s match against Arsenal in west London, followed by a trip to Liverpool on December 14.
Fortunately for Fulham, Spurs did not penalise them for having one less player, as they shared the spoils at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs finish seventh, three points behind the top four.
Fulham stay in ninth place, just one point below Ange Postecoglou’s side.
