Pundit Jamie Carragher has admitted he “got it badly wrong” in his prediction for Nottingham Forest this season.
The former Liverpool defender has been forced to eat humble pie despite the Reds’ strong start to the season. He predicted that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would be relegated, along with Forest, Southampton, and Leicester City.
Rather than looking over their shoulders, the Reds are looking up, as they sit seventh ahead of Saturday’s home game against Ipswich Town. Carragher admits he should have “done his homework” and investigated the squad’s depth at the City Ground.
“Nottingham Forest is the big one that I got wrong,” he said on Sky Sports’ YouTube page, reflecting on his predictions for the 2024/25 season. “They’ve gone close (to relegation) in recent years. This season’s points decision and PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) may have an impact on them. Some of the previous transfers are now coming to fruition. You look at their centre-backs (Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo), who have been fantastic.
“Also, I’ve made the mistake of underestimating their offensive quality. When you look at their attacking players – Chris Wood at the top of the pitch, Elliot Anderson who has come in, Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga – those are probably players you’d expect to play for a team in the Premier League’s middle.
“I probably didn’t conduct enough research on why their attacking players are so good. In addition, the manager is a very experienced Premier League manager who saw great success with a similar-sized team in Wolves a few years ago.
