Chasing Victory: Young Talent Thriving on the International Stage

The Liverpool forward, who is now on loan at Middlesbrough, was named Player of the Match in his team’s 1-0 UEFA Nations League victory at Hampden Park.

Doak was instrumental in the game’s deciding moment on 86 minutes, charging in from the flank and shooting the ball across goal, which was parried out and finished by teammate John McGinn.

“There were a few butterflies and nerves before the game,” the 19-year-old explained. “But once you’re on the pitch, I’m not sure if everyone else sees names or faces.

“I just see another team trying to beat us, therefore we should go and try to beat them. When I’m on the ball, I don’t notice who I’m up against; it’s just a kit. That is all I see. So I simply strive to do my best.”

Doak, making his fifth senior international game, received an applause from the home crowd as he was substituted in stoppage time.

“I just thought they did that for every sub!” he remarked, smiling.

“It’s lovely to get a round of applause, but I don’t put too much thought into it. If it was a little extra, that’s fine; I genuinely appreciate all of the fans’ support.
