Gerrit Cole gets brutally honest about painful blunder in World Series Game 5

The New York Yankees lost in the 2024 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers rode a resilient Blake Treinen and a big fifth-inning offensive outburst to complete the comeback on Wednesday night. Los Angeles’ fifth-inning rally began with a big error by New York starter Gerrit Cole.

Cole faced Dodgers standout Mookie Betts with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Betts grounded out to first, which should have finished the inning. However, Cole failed to cover the first base bag. First baseman Anthony Rizzo appeared to expect Cole to protect the bag and did not touch it. Betts was okay, and Los Angeles took over from there.

Cole admitted after the game that he wasn’t sure how hard the ball came off Betts’ bat. “I took a horrible angle with the ball. I was unsure how hard he hit it. By the time the ball passed me, I was unable to cover first. “Neither of us were,” the Yankees star remarked following the Game 5 loss, according to SNY.

Gerrit Cole pitched admirably despite the fifth-inning collapse. He finished the night with 108 pitches in 6.2 innings. He allowed four hits, five earned runs, four walks, and six strikeouts. Cole exited the game after the Yankees retook the lead in the sixth.
Finally, the Bronx Bombers were unable to win. Gavin Lux tied the game in the ninth inning with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Betts then put Los Angeles up for good with a bases-loaded sac fly of his own.

“This is as awful as it can go. “It’s the worst feeling you can have,” Cole remarked after the loss, according SNY. “You must continue to believe in yourself and give yourself a chance. You keep pushing, and eventually, you fall short. “It is brutal.”

The Yankees are still searching for their elusive 28th World Series championship. It’ll be intriguing to see how New York strengthens its roster this winter. In any case, the 2024 offseason looks to be a fascinating one for the American League pennant winners.
