Report: Packers GM Discloses Behind-the-Scenes Move Before Sealing Brandon McManus Signing

In Week 6, the Green Bay Packers thoroughly dominated the Arizona Cardinals. With the victory, the squad improved to 4-2 on the season. Jordan Love, a second-year starter, is on fire, tossing four touchdown passes in back-to-back games, and the team has received favourable injury updates on its receivers. Everything was going well for the Packers, with one exception. Green Bay’s kicking game has been poor throughout the season.
On Wednesday, the Packers made an official adjustment, releasing rookie kicker Brayden Narveson and signing Brandon McManus. The 12-year veteran agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders during the preseason, but was fired after sexual assault charges arose from his tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst emphasised the team’s attempts to vet the long-time Broncos kicker before handing him a deal. Gutekunst stated that the team relied on the league’s investigation while also completing their own study into the charges against McManus, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. Gutekunst wants to speak with McManus personally about the claims.

“We had a very good conversation with Brandon…” After resolving issues with the league and moving on to other matters, the conversations became more active. We wanted to ensure that we had done our research. We are pleased with this outcome. “We’re excited to get him out there,” Gutekunst told Demovsky. “Obviously he’s a very experienced kicker.”

The Packers did their “due diligence” before signing Brandon McManus

McManus was accused of assaulting two women on the Jaguars team trip to London in 2023. The women were employed as flight attendants and claim the kicker pushed up against them and attempted to kiss one of them during the journey. McManus was eventually not disciplined by the league due to a lack of evidence to substantiate the charges. This allowed him to continue playing in the NFL. Following his signing with Green Bay, he will most likely make his 2024 debut in Week 7.

The Packers have struggled to find a consistent kicker in recent years. Anders Carlson was terminated following his terrible missed field goal in the Divisional Round of the playoffs previous season. In 2024, Green Bay named undrafted free agent Narveson as the team’s starting kicker. However, the squad lost faith in the rookie after he missed five of seventeen field goal tries in the first six weeks of the season. McManus will now aim to secure the position for the Packers.

Green Bay will face the 5-1 Houston Texans at home in Week 7. Fans hope kicking does not play a significant role in the game, which will feature two of the league’s hottest rookie quarterbacks, Jordan Love and CJ Stroud.
