Wolves’ transfer target shines with four goals, making Gary O’Neil regret the missed chance

Wolves may regret not signing one of Gary O’Neil’s stated targets during the summer transfer window.

The summer window was undoubtedly a two-sided story at Molineux ahead of the 2024/25 season.

While the Old Gold attracted several potential stars, O’Neil and Matt Hobbs were unable to obtain the much-needed centre defence signing.

As a result, Wolves are extremely short in the position this season, highlighting a mistake made during the transfer window.

Wolves showed interest in Samuel Omorodion

As expected, the Old Gold were associated with a plethora of talent during the summer transfer window, but only eight were signed by Hobbs and O’Neil.

Samuel Omorodion, also known as Samu, was believed to be interested in joining Molineux before signing with FC Porto in August.

The Portuguese club signed the striker for just €15 million (£12.7 million), a fee that would have been regarded reasonable at Wolves.

Links between the Midlands club and the forward came from HITC, which reported in April that Wolves were ‘interested’ in him.
The article compared Samu’s status at Atletico Madrid to how Wolves recruited Diogo Jota, calling the 20-year-old as a potential ‘great addition’ to O’Neil’s side.

Instead, the talented Spaniard joined Porto and has prospered ever since, with his most recent performance leaving O’Neil and Hobbs asking ‘what if’.

Samu is shining this season

Samu recently played for Spain U21 versus Malta U21 in the U21 European Championship qualifying.

The match concluded in a 6-0 victory for Spain, with the striker scoring four goals, which was even more impressive given that he only played 59 minutes.

The question regarding foreign strikers joining the Premier League is whether they can adapt to the demands of the English game, as Samu has demonstrated.

The 2004-born ace scored twice in Porto’s Europa League match against Manchester United, giving him three goals in only two competition outings.

The alleged Wolves target’s form is reflected in Portugal’s first division, where he has four goals in five appearances, implying that O’Neil and Hobbs squandered an opportunity by not further exploring him.
At the moment, missing out on Samu’s skill is another name on the list of Wolves’ mistakes from the summer, with the 20-year-old demonstrating what he’s capable of.
