Harrison Ashby, a Newcastle United defender, has left Swansea City at the completion of his season-long loan.

The 22-year-old right-back joined the Swans last summer but has made only 16 appearances due to injury, scoring once. A muscular injury cut short Ashby’s season, with his last competitive appearance coming in January following a brief return to the team.

By the end of the season, the defender had played only two of Swansea’s remaining 29 Championship games.

Ashby joined Newcastle from West Ham United in January for £3 million. He played for The Magpies in pre-season last summer, scoring in a 2-1 win over Rangers, but he is yet to make his competitive debut for the club.

Following the conclusion of Swansea’s Championship season, in which they finished 14th, Ashby took to Instagram to send a farewell message: “A big thank you to everyone involved at @swansofficial, a club filled with incredible people, people I’ve made friends with for life, and an unbelievable fan base, want to wish them the best of luck for the future.”

Ashby will be evaluated upon his return to Newcastle before a decision is made regarding his future. The 22-year-old comes in behind Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, and Emil Krafth in the right-back pecking order.

Despite his loan period at Swansea ending, he will be unable to play for Newcastle in the Premier League since he is above the age of 21 and has not been named to the club’s 25-man roster for the 2023-24 season.
